Guatemala

Travel tips for Guatemala

For me, Guatemala was a destination where adventure and culture perfectly intertwined. During a three-week tour, I traveled entirely by public transport. I started in Guatemala City but drove straight through to Antigua. That colonial city, surrounded by volcanoes, immediately felt special. The atmosphere, the colorful streets, and the constant plume of smoke from Volcán de Fuego made an impression on me, something I don't often experience in cities outside of Europe.

For me, Guatemala is synonymous with volcanoes, Mayan history, and colonial charm. Climbing Volcán Acatenango, with views of the constantly erupting Volcán de Fuego, is one of the most impressive experiences in the country. At the same time, I found tranquility around Lake Atitlán and wandered through the ancient temples of Tikal. Guatemala is vibrant and diverse, and it lends itself perfectly to a tour where you truly get to know a country and its people.

Why Guatemala?

  • For active volcanoes such as Volcán Acatenango, Pacaya and Santiaguito
  • To discover Mayan ruins like Tikal in the middle of the jungle
  • For colonial cities like Antigua, surrounded by volcanoes
  • Because culture and adventure come together effortlessly here
  • For colorful markets like that of Chichicastenango
  • For backpacking with relatively easy public transport
  • For relaxing days around Lake Atitlán
  • Because Guatemala is raw, vibrant and surprisingly versatile
